Adam Spencer. Ambassador, Australia

Foundation Ambassador, Adam Spencer is a well-known Australian comedian, entertainer and speaker. His commitment to The Fred Hollows Foundation links to his childhood when he was treated by Fred Hollows.

Adam assists The Foundation by promoting our work around the world and our 'See the World' Challenge.

In 2004, Adam got the chance to see The Foundation's work first-hand when he took part in the 'See the World' trip Nepal. Whilst there, Adam met Dr Sanduk Ruit, Director of Tilganga Eye Centre in Kathmandu.

Tilganga Eye Centre, which was established in 1994, comprises the Fred Hollows Intraocular Lens Laboratory, the Nepal Eye Bank and a surgical centre. The Foundation partners with Tilganga in its efforts to restore sight to people who are needlessly blind, particularly in remote areas of the country.

At Tilganga, Adam was "blown away" when he watched a cataract operation being performed, "I was fascinated by how quick and easy the procedure was. Even though we couldn't communicate, it was obvious that he (the patient) was truly grateful."

Adam's career in radio began when he won the Triple J comedy championships in 1996. The win led him to become a casual presenter with the radio station and in 1999 he became the breakfast program presenter, with co-presenter Wil Anderson, which he continued until 2004.

In late 2004, Adam toured with Wil around Australia on 'The Last Time Tour', to celebrate their time together on Triple J. Adam has also toured with Australian scientist, Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, in the 'Sleek Geek Tour'.

Adam is a talented speaker and was the captain of the Australian Debating Team for three years and has won the 'Best Speaker in the World' title at the World University Debating Championships.

Adam holds a first class honours degree in Pure Mathematics and his passion for science and mathematics led him to host ABC TV programs, Quantum and FAQ from 1998 to 2001.

He has also made regular appearances on The Glass House, Good News Week and The Fat. He has also served on the NSW Premier's Advisory Committee on Greenhouse and Global Warming and the NSW Health Department's Clinical Ethics Review Committee.

Adam has written two books, Little Book of Numbers and More Mind Numbing Maths and is a frequent guest speaker at corporate conventions.
