Andrew crosses the finish line in 2008

Andrew Cohen first competed in the Marathon des Sables in 2007, finishing the gruelling course in 32nd place out of a field of over 750 competitors from around the world.

He then returned to Morocco in 2008 to compete for a second time, finishing once again in 32nd place but this time out of a field of 826 runners and over a course that was notoriously harder and longer than it had ever been. In 2008, Andrew was the first to finish in his age division – a phenomenal achievement.

The Marathon des Sables is arguably the toughest marathon event in the world. It is covers a 250km course across the Sahara desert, testing the physical and psychological stamina of every participant. Athletes from over 20 countries spend seven days and nights crossing sand dunes and face extreme conditions such as severe sand storms and temperatures that range from 0-56 degrees.

Andrew will take on this challenge for a third time next year, competing in the Marathon des Sables from 27 March to 6 April 2009

Since 2007, Andrew has raised nearly $20,000 for The Fred Hollows Foundation, a phenomenal effort.
