Leave a Bequest

Leave the world a better place just as Fred Hollows did. You too can help keep Fred’s dream alive with a gift in your Will.

Leaving the world a better place was one of Fred Hollows' basic beliefs. He was passionate about restoring sight to disadvantaged people in developing countries and improving the health and well being of Indigenous Australians.

Just as Fred's legacy has restored sight and changed lives around the world, you too can help The Fred Hollows Foundation continue to make his dream a reality, with a gift in your Will.

Being named a beneficiary in people's Wills now forms a significant part of The Foundation's income and is helping us to do more to restore sight, hope, dignity and independence.

Helped by the incredible generosity of bequestors, The Foundation is in the process of doubling the number of sight-saving operations it performs!

Types of gifts

After providing for your family and friends, you may choose to support The Foundation with a gift in your Will.

Bequests can be made for The Foundation's general purposes, for our International programs or for our Australian Indigenous programs.

The gift can take the form of:

  • The residue of the estate;
  • A percentage of the estate;
  • A specific amount of money;
  • A life insurance or superannuation policy;
  • Assets such as shares, property, works of art, jewellery etc.;
  • An investment in perpetuity.

If you are able to help The Foundation through a donation in your Will, you may wish to consult your solicitor, trustee company or the Public Trustee regarding the wording.

After her mother's cataract operation, 10-year-old Simila is able to spend more time at school. She hopes to become a doctor, like those who helped her mother.

By making a bequest you'll have the opportunity to help restore the miracle of sight to people in the developing world for years to come.

To see how your gift can restore sight and change lives, read more about The Foundation's CEO Brian Doolan's first-hand account of meeting Simila and Rose, a remarkable tale of overcoming blindness in the remote Samburu district of Kenya.

A bequest to The Foundation will enable us to reduce our costs even further, plan our work more effectively and, most importantly, help us reach out to more people blinded by disadvantage.

Since it was formed in 1992, The Foundation's generous supporters have been making a difference the world can see. The Foundation's achievements include:

  • Restoring sight to over 1 million people;
  • Reducing the cost of cataract surgery to as little as $25 in some developing countries;
  • Driving the price of intraocular lenses (IOLs) from over $100 to just $8 in developing countries;
  • Pioneering modern techniques of cataract surgery;
  • Operating in more than 20 developing countries and remote Indigenous communities within Australia.

The Foundation's work in the Katherine East region includes coordinating the Outback Chef cooking course, where community members learn how to combine bush tucker and store bought foods to make nutritious and delicious meals.

In Australia, The Fred Hollows Foundation works with Indigenous communities helping to provide eye health programs including surgeries, screening and developing better services.  We also provide nutrition programs, including breakfast for school children, helping parents plan meals or providing supplements. Other important initiatives include workforce training, women's health services, literacy and aural health.

But there is still much more to be done. Over the next 5 years The Foundation aims to double the number of people we help to over 2 million people each year. This can only be achieved with your support.
