Julie McCrossin talks for a living. Most recently, she was a presenter on the ABC Radio National program, Life Matters, for five years, initially with Geraldine Doogue and then as a solo presenter.
Prior to Life Matters, Julie was a team leader on the media quiz tv program, Good News Week on Network Ten and ABC TV. Julie first began working for the ABC in 1983 on the women's radio program, The Coming Out Show. She has since presented many other ABC radio programs, including Background Briefing and Arts National, as well as stints on ABC Rural Radio and 702 ABC Sydney.
Julie's television career includes several years as a TV reporter for both the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and ANZAC Day. Julie has also appeared on TV programs as diverse as Compass, Beauty and the Beast and Mornings with Kerri-Anne but her proudest moment was her appearance on ABC TV's Play School, as a silent clown called Plain Jane.
Julie has also worked as a children's entertainer, literacy teacher and community legal educator. She also has university qualifications in the arts, education and law.
In 2005 Julie travelled to the Northern Territory of Australia with The Fred Hollows Foundation's 'See the World' Challenge and visited the Jawoyn communities, located east of Katherine. On her visit, Julie interviewed many local people about the work of The Foundation and the aspirations of the communities.
These interviews were broadcast on Life Matters in May 2005 and they tell many stories, including those of the Community Stores in Wugularr and Barunga, the school and Women's Centre lunch program in Wugularr, the Sunrise Health Service Aboriginal Corporation and their CEO Irene Fisher in Katherine and The Foundation's Women's Officer, Bino Toby.
