Gabi issued the warning from South Africa, where she is currently visiting a sight restoring surgery program initiated through the pioneering work of her husband Fred, who passed away 15 years ago.

“A decade and a half after we lost Fred, people still don’t realise that 75% of cases of blindness can either be treated or prevented,” said Hollows.

“Early detection can be the key to preventing visual impairment, so it is really important for people to look after their eyes and to get their vision tested regularly,” she said.

Results of a national survey, to be released today, found that one third of Australians were risking blindness and vision impairment. The survey of 1,200 people was commissioned by Australia’s peak eye health body, Vision 2020 Australia.

Gabi Hollows said that as well as having regular vision tests, there were other simple ways for Australians to protect their eyes, including quitting smoking and using adequate sun protection.

“With summer just around the corner it’s really important for people to protect their eyes from the sun, as well as their skin. You can do a lot to save your sight by wearing a wide brimmed hat and a good pair of sunnies,” said Hollows.

Smoking and UV exposure are among known factors that cause cataract, which is responsible for up to 50% of cases of blindness worldwide.

In some developing countries the operation to treat cataract blindness and restore sight can cost as little as $25.
