There are many barriers that restrict cataract patients presenting themselves in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, including lack of education and awareness about eye health, poor services and/or inaccessibility to the services that are available.
Overview

The Fred Hollows Foundation supports the work of the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology (TIO) in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) of China, reducing the backlog of patients requiring cataract surgery, and building the skills and capacity of local medical staff.

In 2008, working through our partners, the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology in Nepal, and the Lhasa Institute of Eye Care (LIEC), The Foundation supported four outreach camps which:

  • Screened 1,960 people

  • Conducted 321 cataract operations and 1,414 other sight-restoring interventions.

Program plans: 2010

Working together with our partners, The Foundation will:

  • Provide Small Incision Cataract Surgery training (SICS) at TIO for 1 doctor
  • Conduct equipment maintenance training for a technician from LIEC at TIO
  • Conduct refraction training in Lhasa for 5-10 nurses including its practical application in fieldwork
  • Conduct in-country Outreach Microsurgical Eye Clinic (OMEC) and supervise new eye doctors / nurses in remote locations
  • Undertake project review and development, including capacity building with LIEC in Lhasa.
