Foundation celebrates NT Landcare Award
A horticulture project supported by The Foundation has received major recognition, winning the Local Government Landcare Partnership Award at the 2011 NT Landcare Awards.
The Landcare Awards recognise Territorians who have demonstrated excellence in caring for land and water resources.
One highlight of Roper Gulf Shire Council’s now award-winning environmental initiatives has been The Foundation-backed Horticulture and Landcare Project. This project involved the development of sustainable nurseries, market gardens, green landscapes and orchards. These not only encourage good environmental practices and engagement, but also bring fresh, homegrown fruits and vegetables into local communities.
The Foundation’s commitment to the program is focused on improved health and nutrition. In addition, support is provided for landscaping and dust suppression initiatives to improve environmental conditions. These can also reduce the onset of trachoma and other health conditions.
Another benefit of the program, which impressed judges, was the increased employment and training opportunities available for remote community residents, who have the opportunity to work under the guidance of Roper Gulf Shire’s Regional Land Care and Horticulture Manager.
The Foundation wishes to congratulate everyone involved in implementing such a successful program, which is having a positive impact on both the environment and the people living in the Roper Gulf Shire region.
